Benjamin Netanyahu in Berlin Friendship is a gift of history

We are friends and partners. We endeavour to understand our reciprocal interests, said Chancellor Angela Merkel during the visit of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Berlin. This is an important symbol in the year in which Israel is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel, said Angela Merkel.

Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that German-Israeli government consultations would be held on 4 October. A business delegation will accompany her to Israel, in order to further enhance business relations between the two states.

Israel, Iran and the region

The Chancellor made it plain that differences of opinion exist regarding the usefulness of the Vienna nuclear agreement. The German government does, however, support Israel’s wish that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) evaluate important materials obtained relating to Iran’s nuclear programme.

The Chancellor also stated unequivocally that from Germany’s standpoint, Iran’s influence in the region gives ground for concern, in particular with regard to Israel’s security. She pointed to Iran’s engagement in Yemen and Syria, and to the ballistic missile programme currently in development.

Middle East peace process and Gaza

It is important to work for a two-state solution, said the Chancellor. Germany and Israel agree on this point, she declared. The situation is currently complicated. No talks are taking place. The German government would like to see a revival of the peace process. The two leaders, she reported, had discussed support for the people of Gaza, as well as specific projects where Germany could provide assistance.
