US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Berlin A pillar of Germany's foreign policy

The USA is still Germany’s closest and most important partner outside Europe. The transatlantic alliance is a cornerstone of Germany’s foreign and security policy. When US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited the Federal Chancellery, Chancellor Angela Merkel also stressed the important role played by the USA in German reunification.

Today, Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the Federal Chancellery for talks. Their discussions focused on bilateral relations as well as topical international issues.

Germany intends to play an active role

Before her meeting with the US Secretary of State, the Chancellor said, "Today we face different tasks, but we are still allies and partners, and address our work in the world. That will also shape our talks."

The Chancellor pointed in particular to the conflict in Afghanistan, the Ukraine/Russia conflict, the question of the future of Syria, and the matter of peace in Libya. She pledged that "Germany intends to play an active role" in addressing the outstanding tasks around the world.

Looking back with gratitude

"The fact that we are close partners today, that we are friends, that the United States of America and George Bush helped and supported us so much on the road to German reunification – these are things that we will naturally never forget," said the Chancellor.

Germany is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and looks back with gratitude at the major historic contribution made by Germany’s western partners and allies, in particular the USA, in overcoming the division of Germany and bringing the country together again in peace.

Without the solidarity and support of our partners, this would not have been possible. The close partnership and friendship with the USA was the elementary pillar of the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Germany throughout the Cold War, and this has not changed to this date. The visit of Secretary of State Pompeo underscored the bonds between the two nations.
