Berlin, 12 September 2018: Nursing care, pensions, affordable housing, infrastructure – the government’s draft budget specifically addresses these challenges, declared Chancellor Angela Merkel in the budget debate.

"Prosperity, liberty and peace – that is what people expect us to deliver," underlined the Chancellor. The focus is on providing stability, ensuring comparable living conditions, and wherever possible leaving people with more money in their pockets.

It's the fifth consecutive budget without new borrowing. That is "good news for the young generation" and a good precondition for mastering the challenges facing us, said Angela Merkel.

At the presidential palace, the Chancellor met with Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaite.

Their talks focused on bilateral relations and regional, European-policy and security-policy issues.

Germany and Lithuania maintain cordial relations. The two states have close economic links and cooperate within NATO, said Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit.

Also in the itinerary was a meeting with the Prime Ministers of Estonia and Latvia, Jüri Ratas (at left) and Maris Kucinskis.

This year the Baltic states are celebrating the 100th anniversary of their independence. The Chancellor congratulated all citizens on this "important and good anniversary".

The Chancellor then visited the multinational NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup in Rukla. Her visit began with a talk on the current situation given by the commander.
