North Korea - a political solution is needed to the conflict

The German government has repeatedly called on the North Korean leadership to end its missile tests. It is working for a diplomatic solution to the conflict. Deputy government spokesperson Georg Streiter said it is important for the international community to act together.

On Tuesday (19 September) Chancellor Angela Merkel said she would be devoting all her energy to efforts to find a peaceful solution, reiterating her stance on North Korea. The German government considers that there can only be a diplomatic, peaceful solution to the conflict, said Angela Merkel.

International community must act together

Over recent weeks the German government has repeatedly called on North Korea’s leadership to end the country’s unlawful missile and nuclear tests. On Wednesday at the government press conference in Berlin, deputy government spokesperson Georg Streiter stressed, "It is Pyongyang that is jeopardising the security of the entire region with its unchecked provocations."

It is important that the international community stand together, continued Georg Streiter. Tighter sanctions indicate how the UN Security Council is increasing pressure on North Korea to encourage it to embrace a political solution.

The German government supports United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, "who has welcomed the unity of the UN Security Council on this matter and pointed out that there can only be a political solution to the crisis surrounding North Korea". UN Secretary-General António Guterres and President Donald Trump spoke about North Korea in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
