“Germany wants to play a supportive role”, the Chancellor emphasised. Merkel is also visiting Kenya, Angola and Nigeria. All three countries are of great economic importance to the continent. However, all three are still experiencing significant problems “establishing truly stable government structures”, Merkel said.

“Germany wants to help these countries on their paths to stability and at the same time develop economic cooperation with them”, said the Chancellor. Issues related to the energy industry are at the top of the list of priorities.

This Saturday is “a very special day for Africa”, Merkel pointed out with reference to the founding of the Republic of South Sudan. The topic of Sudan will be at the top of the agenda for the UN Security Council, for which Germany currently holds the chair.

“We would like to see two stable Sudanese states. And South Sudan especially needs our support and the support of the entire international community”, Merkel emphasised.
