Chancellor Angela Merkel called on both Israelis and Palestinians to take very seriously the direct negotiations beginning on 2 September that are hoped to bring about a resolution to the Middle East conflict, and to bring these to a conclusion within the one-year time-limit set.

Previous negotiations have already hammered out possible solutions to the core issues that remain open. Now the political will is needed and the ability to compromise. People in the Middle East want to see a peace solution at last that will bring stability to the entire region.

The US special envoy, Senator George Mitchell informed the Chancellor on Friday evening that direct talks are to be resumed. He thanked her for her support in this endeavour. Angela Merkel congratulated him on his success to date and asked him to continue his tireless efforts to achieve a peace agreement.
